36329818

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…the games have only just begun.

My Rating: 5 Stars – ALL THE STARS
Sooo my favorite book thus far of 2018 has changed again. WHY ARE ALL OF THE BOOKS THIS YEAR SO GOOD? My heart can’t take it. Legendary was so good that I finished it 8 hours ago and am still thinking about it. It was so good that I told one of my employees the entire plot of Caraval and Legend just so that I would have someone to freak out with (the poor guy deserves a raise if I’m honest). It was SO GOOD that I’m already rereading Caraval so that I can also reread Legendary.
Alright, so instead of just gushing, let me break down what exactly I liked about Legendary in the most spoiler free way that I can. Last year, when Caraval was released, I absolutely fell in love with the premise. The world was just so intriguing and wonderful. It sucked me in immediately – Stephanie Garber paints a beautiful image. I finished Caraval in one sitting because I just needed more of the world. Unfortunately, I didn’t love Scarlett as a lead character. I disliked the way she treated her sister, and found myself yelling at her through the pages of my book anytime she did something stupid. Naturally, when I heard that Legendary was going to be told from Tella’s POV, I was so excited!
Tella is the MC I was looking for. She was bold and fierce, wonderfully loyal and a fighter. She didn’t let herself get pushed around and she was clever. The best part though? She knew it. She spent very little time doubting herself. She knew she was smart and could win Caraval, and it made me fall in love with her as a character.
In Legendary, Garber introduced a whole new set of characters, the Fates. Their history was so creative and fascinating – I would honestly read a book about them alone. My favorite of them was, of course, the Prince of Hearts. He was the best kind of character – a wicked, sexy villain. He actually reminded me a bit of the Darkling from the Grisha trilogy. I loved him so much that I’ve already commissioned a custom candle for him. I adored Tella’s interactions with him and can’t wait to see where things go with his character (Stephanie, if you’re reading this, please don’t kill him).
Although I loved the Prince of Hearts, Legend definitely stole the show. That’s right folks – I KNOW WHO LEGEND IS! I squealed with excitement when he was finally revealed. Though I wasn’t overly surprised, I was thrilled to discover that he was who I wanted him to be.
The full cast of characters that I enjoyed in Caraval returned and, if possible, I loved this setting for the game more than the last. The city was so full of history and interesting characters. I hope that the next book is set in the same place so that I can explore it more. The plot was fast paced and kept me guessing. I do feel obligated to warn you – the book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. There was a lot left unresolved which both frustrates me and makes me endlessly happy. I’m thrilled because it implies that there will be another book. However, I want Garber to tell me what happens next RIGHT NOW. I NEED TO KNOW.
My Takeaway: The moral of the story here is: buy this book. If you were a fan of Caraval, I can absolutely tell you that Legendary is even better. It kept me glued to the pages from the first chapter and I am still thinking about it hours later. The book hangover is real, chums.
