Bookish Halloween Costumes

Happy Halloween Bookworms! I think we can all agree that bookish Halloween costumes are the best kind. Reading The Beatuiful by Renee Ahdieh gave me a GREAT idea this year – I decided to make a list of bookish Halloween costumes, ranked from easiest to most difficult to put together.

Easy:

Need to throw together a costume last minute? I’ve got you covered!

Shadowhunter: This one is as straightforward as throwing together a cat costume last minute! All you really need to be a Shadowhunter are some black pants, a black tank top and some tattoo runes! You can get the runes from Etsy here! If you have more time and want to put a bit more effort into your costume, you can add a stele (also on Etsy) and even a whip if you’re in the mood to be Izzy.

In the same vein, you can be Church from Shadowhunters! Who doesn’t love Jem’s iconic cat? All you really need for this one is an adult sized cat onsie, found here.

My final easy costume is a classic and a personal favorite of mine – BELLE! All it takes to dress as Belle is a costume purchase and some worn looking books in a basket. This is my personal favorite Belle costume.

Medium:

This is where my idea from The Beautiful comes into play. This costume requires a bit more planning and unless you’re great with hair may also require an appointment for some styling. If you’re so inclined, you can dress as a vampire! The look has the potential to be really glam if you’ve got the time and money to invest. This dress is, in my opinion, PERFECT for a 1800’s New Orleans Vampire look. Next, you’ll want to get the Victorian look for your hair. My favorite hair style for this outfit is a messy Victoria Bun! The tutorial I’ve linked makes it look really easy and its such an elegant look. Now all you need is a little bit of red lipstick and some great fake vampire teeth (maybe even fake eyelashes) and you’re done! While this one does require a bit of prep, the look itself is pretty easy to throw together once you have all of the pieces.

Hard:

Alright, buckle up, this one is going to be pretty difficult to put together. Its worth it though because you get to be a HOBBIT! Who the hell doesn’t want to be a hobbit? This is what you’ll need:

Hobbit Ears and Wig OR if you want to be a girl hobbit, just Ears

Hobbit Cloak (this is my personal favorite) or a more plain option is this one

Cloak Clasp

Hobbit Feet

THE RING

This Newsie Costume is the best option outfit-wise if you want to be comfortable.

You can also wear this dress underneath your cloak if you want to be a girl Hobbit!

Hopefully one of these costumes works for you – this year or next (Amazon next day shipping and a weekend party could be your best friends if you want to wear one this year). Thank you SO MUCH to Penguin Teen for sending a copy of The Beautiful my way and for allowing me to be part of this blog tour!

The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh is out now and was absolutely a FIVE STAR read for me!

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.
